Moms Don’t Get Sick Days

In the working world, we can stay out of work when we’re sick.  We may or may not get paid for it, and it might not make the boss happy, but there’s rarely anything forcing us to go in when we’re not feeling well.  But as moms, we don’t get to call in sick.

Stay at home moms have lots of responsibilities, and they don’t just go away when we get the flu or a stomach virus.  The kids still need to be fed, bathed, diapered, entertained, and helped with their homework.  There are dishes to wash, laundry to do, and floors to sweep.  What’s a sick mom to do?

Getting Help

Moms often convince themselves that they are the only ones who can do things for the kids and around the house.  But that’s hardly ever true.  When you’re sick, don’t fall victim to the Superwoman complex.  Ask for help.

Often, the kids can help.  Older children can do many things for themselves, and they can also help with the younger children.  They can also take on some extra chores on a temporary basis.  Instead of feeling guilty, reward them with cash or extra privileges for helping you out.

If the kids aren’t capable of helping you out, do the bare minimum when it’s just you and them at home.  Your husband can help out around the house when he gets home from work.  This is nothing to feel guilty about, either.  Just think of all the things you’ve done for him.

If it comes down to it, you could get someone to come in and help you.  Maybe your sister or friend could take the kids while you get some rest.  You can reciprocate by offering to take her kids out when she needs or wants some time to herself.  Hiring a babysitter is another option that shouldn’t be dismissed.

You’re Not Lying Down on the Job

Moms often feel that they are letting their kids down when they can’t do the things they usually do for them.  But when you’re sick, you need time to recuperate.  If you don’t take the time, it could mean that you’ll be sick longer, causing you to be there for them even less.

If you’re down with something that’s contagious, you also run the risk of passing it to your kids.  Wouldn’t you feel even guiltier if you did?  Asking for help can allow you to get better faster and help keep your kids from getting sick along with you.

Being sick is bad enough when we only have ourselves to worry about.  When we have kids, it makes it that much harder to give ourselves a chance to get back to 100 percent.  But just like everyone else in the world, moms need rest when they’re sick.  Getting it will help you get back to your regular activities sooner.
